Diplomacy optimism drove markets higher early this week, then reversed hard as oil rallied back above 103 dollars.

The pattern is becoming familiar: progress on Iran talks eases oil, and any wobble sends it right back up.

Chips rally on diplomacy and AI momentum

Technology led the advance through Monday and Tuesday.

The S&P 500 rose 1.5 percent Monday, its best day since early August, as Meta jumped 11 percent on early success signs for its AI agent.

Chipmakers extended the move Tuesday. The Nasdaq 100 hit a record, its sixth straight gain for semiconductors, with AMD topping 1 trillion dollars in value.

Diplomacy fed the rally directly

Trump also said the conflict would end shortly after the midterms, and a China summit with Xi added to the optimistic tone.

Oil snaps back and inflation returns

That momentum reversed on Wednesday in one session.

Brent jumped to 103 dollars after Iran's president said the country will not allow free navigation through Hormuz while sanctions and a blockade remain in place.

That single line undercut days of diplomatic optimism. Equities and bonds fell together as inflation bets firmed again.

The bond market adds its own pressure

A weak Treasury auction compounded the oil driven selloff.

A 70 billion dollar five year note auction came in weak, pushing yields across most maturities to nearly two decade highs.

The dollar advanced against every major currency. US business activity data showing its fastest expansion since 2021 added further fuel to the inflation case.

The Fed already raised rates 25 basis points last week. Fed Governor Michael Barr said further tightening will likely be needed to hit the 2 percent target, and money markets now fully price two more hikes over the next three decisions.

Separately, the Trump administration is working with refiners to voluntarily limit diesel exports rather than impose an outright ban, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said.

The key structure

This remains layered

Geopolitics → Oil → Inflation → Federal Reserve → Equity leadership

Right now

Every diplomatic gain this week has been undone by a single Iranian statement. The market has not learned to trust the trend yet.
