The Fed delivered its first rate hike in three years. Markets are now pricing the consequences across every asset class.
Oil, AI safety, and inflation data all built the case for tightening.
AI leaders call for restraint, markets punish chips anyway
The week opened with an unusual split inside AI itself.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing development of the most advanced AI systems, citing the risk of losing human control.
OpenAI's Sam Altman and SpaceXAI's Elon Musk backed the proposal.
Microsoft researchers released their own limits on frontier models.
Trump pushed back, arguing slower US development would benefit China.
- A key semiconductor index fell 5.9 percent
- Nvidia and Broadcom were the biggest casualties
- The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.8 percent
The selloff reflected positioning ahead of the Fed as much as the safety debate itself.
Oil and yields build the case for a hike
Energy prices climbed steadily into the Fed decision.
Brent rose from above 105 dollars Monday to 109 Tuesday, pressuring price expectations all week.
The 10 year yield hit 5 percent Tuesday, its highest in nearly two decades. A weak 20 year auction added further strain.
Hotter core inflation data last week had already strengthened the case for tightening. Bitcoin fell after the Senate blocked a crypto market structure bill.
The Fed hikes, market prices more to come
The FOMC voted unanimously to raise rates to 3.75 to 4 percent, its first hike in three years.
Projections point to one more increase this year. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh held a firm line, noting broad price growth still above 3 percent over six and twelve months.
Equities fell to their lowest since July, with most S&P 500 sectors declining and the Dow down 1.2 percent.
Two year yields hit their highest since 2024. Money markets now price roughly 50 percent odds of another hike in October.
Two more decisions remain this week, from the Bank of England and Bank of Japan.
The key structure
AI investment and safety debate → Oil → Inflation → Federal Reserve → Equity leadership
- The Fed has hiked for the first time in three years, with one more signaled
- Oil sits above 109 dollars, keeping inflation risk elevated
- Ten year yields sit near 5 percent, a near two decade high
- AI leadership is split between acceleration and self-imposed limits
- Two more central bank decisions could extend the repricing
The tightening cycle has restarted. The market is asking how far it goes.
