On Tuesday, growth assets moved together across every asset class. Bitcoin, Nasdaq, and semiconductors all surged while volatility and crude both fell sharply.

Today, the bond market told a different story entirely.

30 year yields pushed to their highest since 2004.

An expanded government bond buyback operation fell short of what the market expected.

The S&P 500 finished little changed, though most of its constituents actually declined.

That's the split worth naming.

The Tuesday rally was read as broad risk appetite returning. It moved together across FX, futures, and equities, which is normally the stronger kind of signal.

Two days later, the part of the market that prices long-term compensation for risk is demanding more of it, not less.

Investors are asking for a higher premium to hold longer-dated debt, and it isn't only about inflation.

Government spending and rising corporate borrowing to finance AI investment are both feeding into that premium.

Money markets are now fully pricing three additional Fed hikes over the next year.

Oil isn't resolving the disagreement either.

Brent settled near 107 dollars, trimming some gains on reports the US and Iran are exploring a phased agreement to reopen Hormuz.

This week's earlier pattern already showed how fast that kind of optimism can reverse on a single line from Tehran.

That's the thesis.

Short-term risk appetite and long-term compensation for risk aren't pricing the same world right now.

One is rewarding growth and falling volatility. The other is demanding more to hold duration, regardless of how Tuesday's rally looked.

The question is no longer

"Is risk appetite back?"

It's

"Which market is right about what comes next, the one pricing a rally, or the one pricing three more hikes and a two-decade high in long-term yields?"

A single strong session in equities and crypto doesn't settle a disagreement the bond market has been building for weeks.
