PGI13 August 2026

The week opened by framing a single question.

Would inflation data support the current policy path.

By Thursday, that question already has two "yes" answers back to back.

CPI came in soft on Wednesday, with core CPI at 2.5 percent year over year, matching the slowest pace since March 2021.

Today's PPI reinforced it. Wholesale inflation cooled more than expected on lower energy and food prices.

The market's response has been immediate and consistent.

The S&P 500 closed at a record high.

Money markets now price under 40 percent odds of a September hike, down from under 50 percent on Wednesday alone.

That's the surface story. Underneath it, two parts of the market are disagreeing.

The Fed itself isn't unified.

Barkin argued for holding rates steady, but flagged that certain price pressures could still become embedded.

Hammack went further, questioning whether the recent disinflation will actually last and repeating her call to hike soon.

The bond market is sending a similar split signal.

Short-term yields fell on the inflation data, exactly as the equity rally would suggest.

But the US sold 30-year bonds this week at the highest yield in a quarter century, a sign investors want more compensation to hold long-dated debt, regardless of where inflation sits right now.

That's the thesis.

Equities are pricing a done deal.

The Fed and the long end of the bond market are pricing an open question.

Those two signals can coexist for a while. They tend not to coexist indefinitely.

The question is no longer

"Is inflation cooling?"

It's

"Which part of the market is right about what happens next, the one pricing certainty or the one still demanding a premium for doubt?"

Two consecutive soft prints are a trend. They aren't yet a resolution, not while the people setting policy are still arguing about it.
