Markets rarely move on one risk at a time.

This week, they're moving on two.

The first is familiar.

Oil pushed above $100 a barrel as the US-Iran conflict continued to escalate rather than cool.

No sign of de-escalation from either side. Renewed threats, no fresh negotiations.

Treasury yields moved to their highest levels this year.

The inflation channel that opened on Wednesday hasn't closed. It's widened.

The second is newer.

AI earnings this week weren't judged on growth. They were judged on discipline.

Alphabet beat estimates and still fell nearly 7%, after lifting its capital spending outlook.

Tesla fell 15% on weaker profits, despite strong delivery numbers.

The market isn't questioning whether AI demand is real.

It's questioning whether the capital being deployed against it is being deployed well.

That's the thesis.

For most of this cycle, AI risk and macro risk have moved on separate tracks.

This week, they moved on the same one.

Higher oil. Higher yields. Higher scrutiny on capital efficiency. All in the same session.

The result: the S&P 500 posted its sharpest decline in a month, and the megacap index its worst session since the tariff-driven selloff in April 2025.

The question is no longer

"Is this an AI story, or a macro story?"

It's

"What happens to positioning built on the assumption that these risks stay separate?"

Two risks that don't move together are diversification.

Two risks that start moving together are concentration — even when the positions look different on paper.

That's not a reason to exit. It's a reason to know which one you're actually holding.
