PGI2 October 2026

The labour market cracked across two consecutive reports.

Inflation ran hot everywhere else.

Macro Breakdown

US labour data deteriorated sharply.

Non-Farm Payrolls came in at 29K against an 89K forecast, well below both expectations and last month's 133K. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, and wage growth slowed to 0.1% against a 0.3% forecast.

Consumer confidence collapsed too, falling to 81.9 against an 89.2 forecast, one of the sharper misses in recent months.

JOLTS job openings dropped to 7.08M, below forecast and down from 7.34M prior.

Inflation moved the other way almost everywhere.

Tokyo core CPI surged to 2.7% against a 1.8% forecast. Eurozone headline CPI jumped to 3.8% from 3.2% the month before. German prelim CPI beat at 0.6%.

Australia's CPI cooled slightly to 4.0% y/y against a 4.1% forecast, though the RBA still delivered its forecast hike to 4.60%.

ADP beat sharply at 90K against a 73K forecast, and final US GDP was revised up to 2.2% from 1.5%.

Positioning (COT)

AUD shorts widened sharply, from -46.8K to -63.2K, despite the RBA hike.

EUR shorts deepened to -63.3K from -52.3K.

GBP shorts extended to -91.1K from -82.6K.

JPY eased slightly, longs down to 55.4K from 72K.

Oil longs pulled back notably, to 109.5K from 141.1K.

S&P 500 shorts narrowed slightly, to -142.5K from -133.2K.

Core Insight

A rate hike from the RBA would typically support AUD positioning.

Instead, shorts widened further, the same pattern seen with EUR and GBP against their own data this month.

The bigger story sits in the labour report itself. A payrolls miss this large alongside rising unemployment would usually support dovish repricing and risk appetite.

FX positioning moved the opposite way, deepening shorts across every major currency.

That combination, weak US labour data and broadly defensive FX positioning at the same time, suggests the market isn't reading this payrolls miss as a reason for optimism.

Hot inflation prints across Tokyo, the Eurozone, and Germany arriving in the same week gives a reason why.

Forward Look

Next week is lighter on top-tier releases but carries its own signal.

FOMC Meeting Minutes land Wednesday, the first detailed look at Fed thinking since this week's payrolls miss.

ISM Services, Canadian employment, and preliminary US consumer sentiment round out the week.
